differed from what you expected? No expectations; no disappointments.
Cornell activities post-grad:
1961 After graduating Cornell, I signed with
ABC-Paramount Records as folk duo “The Appalachians”
with Atlanta pal Stan Robinson
(father-to-be of Chris and Rich Robinson, “The Black Crowes”). 1962
commissioned as Ensign in U.S. Navy stationed in San Diego,
CA and began singing as duo with best
friend Bernie Leadon (founder-to-be of “The Eagles”). 1965 spent
two years with NATO in Naples, Italy sharing a villa overlooking the Bay of
Naples with naval officer pals from San Diego, enjoying the no-speed-limit autostrade in my XKE Jaguar ragtop and the food,
operas, ragazze italiane,
and old world Italian way of life. 1967 returned to the U.S., left the
military as an 03 (LT) and joined Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, MI as Zone Manager
in Lincoln-Mercury Division. 1970 determined corporate management was
not my thing; bought a motorcycle and van in which to transport it, and split
for L.A., CA. Hooked up with Jimmy Hilton (producer of “Iron Butterfly”),
who signed me to Metromedia Records. 1972 married a Beverly
Hills “princess” and together moved to Carmel,
CA to open the 3rd Alice’s
Restaurant. 1974 took off for Maui, HI
with my girlfriend, waiting tables in Lahaina then
moving up Haleakala to Makawao, Pukalani
and Kula, living as hippies, growing a little “Maui bud”
and ingesting our share of “window pane” and little
purple mushrooms. 1975 returned to L.A.
as a premie following Prem
Pal Singh Guru Maharaji. Spent 2 years backpacking
around Europe, the Mediterranean
and Africa with a good friend I’d met on Maui.
1977 moved to Santa Barbara, CA,
married my second wife and had my son Ethan (Cornell 2000, Hastings
College of the Law 2004), now my
best friend and a successful corporate lawyer in San
Francisco. 1980 moved to Hartford,
CT to start Hansa
Worldwide Corporation and Austrian Crystal Haus,
importing raw lead crystal pieces from Austria,
Germany and Czechoslovakia,
manufacturing them into jewelry and decorative ornaments, wholesaling and
retailing the finished product. 1986 returned to Santa Barbara and took
a position as VP/Sales and Marketing for Hydrex, a
statewide pest control company. 1988 joined a real estate investment
firm representing undeveloped tracts in the Antelope Valley, north of L.A.
1990 founded Ocean View Real Estate, a boutique brokerage firm
representing high-end properties in Santa Barbara, Montecito and Hope Ranch.
1997 with Ethan a sophomore at Cornell, moved to Nashville, TN to start a
career as a “country music” songwriter, publisher and producer, founding Hansa Worldwide Music Group, encompassing Lightning
Records, eight spirits music (ASCAP publisher) pazienza music (BMI publisher), Maserati
Productions, and SuperVision (management).
I’m currently in process of publishing the first three books of my children’s
series “The Beyonders” and looking for a
publisher for LunchBoxes and LoveNotes
(The Busy Mom’s Alternative To Peanut Butter And Jelly). My personal tastes
run to Vipassana meditation, Hatha
yoga, Kung Fu and T’ai Ch’i,
hiking the deep woods of the Natchez Trace and downhill skiing.
Personal reflections:
The purpose of life is joy - how much you can experience as a result of how
much you give.
